Getting ready for school!
Is your child starting school soon? Whether they have been mainly at home, in a nursery or pre-school, the transition into school life can be challenging. Join my three part online course, where we will discuss:
- Tips and tricks to help them with some of the practicalities of the school day.
- Some activities to try as a family to help develop their social skills, ready for time in a busy classroom.
- A 'who's who' of school life - empowering parents to know who to reach out to for further support when needed.
- A brief introduction to maths and phonics (see the courses on these for details on how to learn about these in more detail.)

Introduction to phonics and early reading and writing.
Do words like 'grapheme', 'phoneme' and 'split-vowel digraph' sound like an alien language to you?
Sign up for my three part course, covering:
1. What is Phonics?
A detailed run through of the background and research behind Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP), the vocabulary your child will soon be excitedly using, and the stages of a phonics lesson. We'll also discuss the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check (PSC).
2. Early reading
A session discussing the application of phonics in reading, through decoding words by identifying known graphemes, 'chunking up' longer ones, and spotting 'tricky words.' We'll then look at applying 'prosody,' and developing comprehension skills.
3. Early writing
A session discussing how to support your child when they ask you how to write a word or sentence.
If you've ever faced the dread of being given a page of incomprehensible writing by your child, and asked to read it, then this session will give you the tools to help your child to unjumble it. We will cover 'segmenting' a word into the phonemes and how to choose a suitable grapheme to represent this sound. We will also touch on handwriting and editing skills.
Introduction to early Maths
Does your child's maths homework use methods or visuals that seem a million miles away from what you were taught?
Sign up for my three part course covering:
1. The EYFS and Primary maths curriculum
A breakdown of the EYFS and Primary maths curriculum, discussing the areas taught and how these are developed through the school. We will also discuss the Year 4 Multiplication Check, and the Year 6 SATS Maths papers.
2. Number skills and methods
We will discuss the initial number skills taught, and how the understanding of these is crucial for a secure knowledge. You will explore some visual representations of number, including part-whole models, number lines and 10 frames, and the vocabulary used alongside these.
3. Written methods
In this session we will explore some of the written methods used to solve addition, subtraction, division and multiplication calculations. We will discuss the development of these for more complex calculations, and how to break these down when supporting your child with their Maths.
